I am a political science student with a background in journalism, and pride myself on communicating effectively and thinking critically. I am looking to turn my passion for politics and content creation into an impactful career. Making a difference and effective altruism are the main drivers of my work.

I am eager to contribute my research skills, new media competencies and independent work ethic, which I have demonstrated in past roles in peace and security, journalism and public speaking.

Currently

As a Communications and Research Assistant at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – the Hague (ICCT), I take a data-driven approach to communicating our work and support the publication process behind the top-tier scholarship of the ICCT Journal.

I am currently completing the final year of my undergraduate studies in political science, specialising in international relations, at Leiden University (due to graduate in 2020-21). My research interests focus on political violence, the role of the internet in politics, and queer representation.

I created and maintain the POFMA’ed Dataset, a dataset of every electronic communication subject to Singapore‚Äôs fake news legislation. The dataset aims to be a resource for academics, journalists and the general public. Read this Explainer Infographic for an overview of the law and its uses.

In my spare time, I produce digital content to express my love for the trivial and obscure. My creations can be found on my blog, Knicknacks. Some noteworthy examples include Twitter bots (@SGForumBot) and alternate history games (#ChooseYourOwnSingapore).

Background

Peace and Security: As the Project Monitoring and Evaluation Intern at the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), I contributed to the Network Team in the writing of grant proposals and reports for donors, conducting research and desk reviews, and database entry; supporting the work of the over 200 civil society organisations that comprise GPPAC.

Media: As a journalist in Singapore, I created media content and contributed to the social media presence of Yahoo Singapore. Prior to that, I completed my Diploma in filmmaking and journalism, with a focus on content for digital audiences. Examples of content I have created can be found here.

As the first elected secretary of my bachelor programme’s student association, I created my organisation’s first Website and Newsletter.

Public Speaking: I am a co-founder and organiser of Leiden University’s Hague Debate Society. In the past, I had the honour of representing my institute and country in international debate tournaments such as the Asian Debate Institute, while serving as Singapore Polytechnic’s Debate Society President. A list of my debate achievements can be found here.

My Impact

Persuasive Content: My background in the media has equipped me with essential skills (interviewing, press statements, social media management) for creating clear, concise and persuasive multimedia content. Check out my portfolio for examples of my work.

Knowledge and Expertise: I have an excellent academic record (in both International Relations, and Journalism & Filmmaking), and excel particularly in the subjects of international relations, economics, statistics and cultural anthropology. I am proficient with both quantitative (SPSS) and qualitative research methods.

Intercultural Understanding: My achievements in debating and my past work experience represent my ability to engage with, reconcile and learn from a wide variety of perspectives and sources. I have used these skills to communicate effectively with my peers; in settings from Singapore to the Netherlands.
